Neighbour backed over woman with car

A tragic scene unfolded
in a North York neighbourhood Friday afternoon as an elderly
woman was run over by a neighbour's vehicle. Marie Meingarten,
76, was outside her home on Ellerslie Avenue, near Bathurst
and Finch Av. around 3 p.m. carrying food and cooking utensils
down a small sidewalk toward the garage to put it in the family
car. But from what investigators can gather, the woman somehow
fell off the walkway and onto her next door neighbour's adjacent
driveway, where she was run over when the driver came out
of his home and failed to see her behind his Chevrolet Suburban.
Sgt. Ken Trotman of traffic services said it appears the man's
vehicle thumped the woman, and then ran over her as he backed
out of the driveway. |
Paramedics were
called to the scene after the driver, 40, pulled forward in
the driveway and got out to see what he had hit.
|
"It's an unfortunate
accident," Trotman said, adding that no charges will be
laid against the driver of the vehicle. |
Meingarten was
pronounced dead at the scene after succumbing to massive head
and internal injuries.
Neighbours said the woman and her husband were an active couple,
and Meingarten was involved with numerous charities. |
